Awake or lightly sedated liposuction —
how Cheongdam chooses, and why never general.
Every liposuction at ARTNER Cheongdam, Gangnam is performed under tumescent local anesthesia. Small single areas are done fully awake with a thirty-minute discharge; larger or multi-area cases add light sedation for comfort across a longer procedure. General anesthesia with intubation is never used, because it is the highest-risk component of liposuction and it is avoidable.

In much of the world liposuction means general anesthesia by default. In Korea it does not, and that difference is the single most consequential thing many international patients discover in Gangnam. Here is what each option actually involves and how ARTNER Cheongdam decides between the two it uses.
You are anxious about anesthesia, or about being awake.
- You have been told elsewhere that liposuction needs general anesthesia.
- You have a cardiovascular condition and want to avoid sedation.
- You find the idea of being awake during surgery stressful.
- You are having a large area treated and wonder if awake is realistic.
- You want to know whether sedation costs extra.
Both routes are safe and both avoid the thing worth avoiding. The choice comes down to how long the case takes.
Three options, and the one we do not use
The third column is included because it is the default in many countries — not because it is offered at ARTNER Cheongdam.
| Fully awake | Light sedation | General anesthesia | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Used at ARTNER Cheongdam | Yes — single small areas | Yes — large or multi-area | Never |
| Consciousness | Fully awake, talking | Drowsy, breathing on your own | Unconscious, intubated |
| Systemic risk | Lowest | Low | Highest component of lipo risk |
| Discharge | About 30 minutes | Same day, after observation | — |
| Real-time symmetry check | Yes — you reposition on request | Partial | No |
| Typical areas | Chin, knees, flanks, bra line, cheeks | Abdomen, thighs, arms, 360 | — |
| Extra cost | — | ₩100,000 gas sedation option | — |
Why general anesthesia is never used in Cheongdam
Deep anesthesia and intubation account for a large share of the serious risk in liposuction. Removing them removes that share — no breathing tube, no deep sedation, no airway management, and no anesthesia recovery period afterwards.
Tumescent local anesthetic numbs the area thoroughly enough that it is unnecessary for the volumes ARTNER Cheongdam treats. Where a case would genuinely require general anesthesia, that is a case we would decline or stage rather than perform.
What fully awake actually feels like
Pressure and movement rather than pain. The only real discomfort is the initial infiltration of the tumescent solution, which takes a few minutes. After that the area is numb and you can talk with the director throughout.
It also has a clinical advantage: you can shift position on request, so symmetry is checked in real time while you are standing or turning. That is not possible under general anesthesia, and it is one reason awake technique produces even results.

When light sedation is added
For full abdomen, thighs, arms or 360 liposuction in Cheongdam — cases running one to four hours where staying completely still and alert is more than comfort allows. You remain breathing on your own and are discharged the same day, without the anesthesia recovery that follows a general.
It is offered as an optional gas sedation at ₩100,000, and it does not change the per-area price. Nobody is charged more for needing to be comfortable.
Which one suits your case
Fully awake: a single small area — double chin, knees, flanks, bra line, cheeks, calves — or any patient who wants the maximum-safety route, including those with cardiovascular conditions where sedation adds risk.
Light sedation: larger volumes, multiple areas in one session, or significant anxiety about medical procedures. Dr. Pyeon decides at consultation in Gangnam after examination and screening rather than by asking which you prefer.
Is there a volume limit to awake technique?
Yes, and it is honest to say so. Local anesthetic dosing and patient comfort set a practical ceiling, which is exactly why larger cases use light sedation rather than being forced through fully awake.
A clinic claiming any volume can be done fully awake is either treating small volumes or not counting carefully. ARTNER Cheongdam states the limit and stages larger goals across sessions.
What screening happens before either route
Blood work, ECG, physical examination and an internal-medicine review by Dr. Pyeon — cardiovascular, metabolic and thyroid. Lidocaine sensitivity is screened for specifically, since tumescent technique depends on it.
That screening is the reason some cases are declined or postponed at day 1 in Cheongdam. Avoiding general anesthesia lowers risk; it does not remove the need to check whether the patient is fit for the case.

Being awake is not a compromise, it is an advantage — I can have a patient turn and check the line while I work. Where a case is too long for that, light sedation is the answer. General anesthesia is not on my menu.
