Lymphatic drainage massage after liposuction —
when, how often, and what ARTNER Cheongdam, Gangnam includes.

Manual lymphatic drainage after liposuction reduces swelling faster, softens firm areas sooner and lowers the chance of fluid pockets — but only when it is light, directional and started at the right time. Deep massage in the first weeks does harm. ARTNER Cheongdam, Gangnam starts gentle drainage from day two or three, recommends six to ten sessions over the first month, and builds it into the 6-week aftercare program alongside RF tightening.

Light, directional, from day three — the Cheongdam lymphatic routine.

"Should I get lymphatic massage?" is asked at almost every ARTNER Cheongdam follow-up. Yes — with three qualifications about timing, pressure and who does it. Done wrong it bruises and prolongs swelling; done right it shortens the awkward weeks noticeably.

If this sounds like you

You want the swelling gone faster and are not sure what helps.

  • You are swollen and firm two weeks after surgery.
  • A spa offered "lymphatic massage" and you are not sure it is the right kind.
  • You want to know how soon to start and how often.
  • You are flying home and want to continue at home.
  • You want to know what ARTNER Cheongdam includes versus charges for.

Here is what works, what does not, and how the Gangnam program is built.

What lymphatic drainage does after liposuction

Liposuction leaves tunnels in the fat layer that fill with tumescent fluid, blood and inflammatory fluid; the lymphatic vessels that normally clear fluid are disrupted in the same area. Manual lymphatic drainage — very light, rhythmic strokes directed toward intact lymph nodes — moves that fluid out, which reduces swelling, softens the firm fibrotic feel of weeks two to six, and lowers the chance of a seroma (a pocket of fluid that needs draining).

What it does not do is reshape the result, break down fat, or substitute for compression. Anyone promising those is selling a different massage.

Timing: when to start and when to stop in Cheongdam

Period Lymphatic drainage at ARTNER Cheongdam
Day 0–2 None — incisions draining, tissue too tender
Day 2–3 First very light session, 20–30 minutes, around not on incisions
Week 1–2 2–3 sessions per week, light pressure, 30–40 minutes
Week 3–4 2 sessions per week; pressure may increase slightly as tenderness falls
Week 5–6 1–2 sessions; gentle fibrosis work where firm bands remain
After week 6 Optional; most patients no longer need it

Six to ten sessions in the first month is the typical total. More is not better; the goal is to keep fluid moving, not to force it.

Pressure: the mistake that bruises

True manual lymphatic drainage uses the weight of the hand, not the strength of the arm — enough to move skin over the tissue beneath, no more. Deep-tissue, "fat-breaking" or vigorous massage in the first four weeks ruptures healing capillaries, worsens bruising, increases fibrosis and can displace healing tissue into irregularities. ARTNER Cheongdam has repaired results from patients who had aggressive massage elsewhere in week one.

If a session hurts, it is too deep. Tell the therapist or stop.

What the 6-week program in Gangnam includes

ARTNER Cheongdam's ART-FAT 6-week program combines lymphatic drainage with radiofrequency tightening and the director's check at each visit: typically twice-weekly sessions in the first fortnight and weekly thereafter, with RF applied to accelerate skin retraction over the treated area. It is optional and priced separately from the surgery; the first lymphatic session on day two or three is included in every ART-FAT plan so you learn the technique before flying home.

Doing it at home abroad

Most international patients leave Cheongdam between day five and seven and continue at home. Two options. A certified manual lymphatic drainage therapist — look for MLD or Vodder training, and tell them it is post-liposuction week one — at two sessions a week for three weeks. Or self-drainage, taught by ARTNER Cheongdam's nurse before you leave: five minutes, twice a day, light strokes toward the groin or armpit depending on the area, after showering and before the garment goes back on.

Photos on WhatsApp at two and six weeks let the director check that swelling is tracking normally and adjust the advice.

The remote follow-up structure: remote follow-up after flying home.

Compression, movement, water: the other three

Lymphatic drainage works alongside three things, not instead of them. Compression garments keep fluid from re-accumulating between sessions and are the single biggest factor in a smooth result. Walking — gentle, frequent, from day one — pumps the lymphatic system continuously. Water intake of two to three litres a day helps clearance. Patients who do all four finish the swollen phase weeks earlier than those who rely on massage alone.

When massage is not the answer

A soft, fluctuant swelling that moves like a water balloon is a seroma, and it needs aspiration by the director, not massage. Increasing redness, heat and pain around an incision is a possible infection. Sudden one-sided calf swelling needs urgent assessment. Send a photo to ARTNER Cheongdam before booking any massage if you see these; the clinic answers in English within 24 hours.

In short — Lymphatic drainage after liposuction helps — if it is very light, directional and started on day two or three, six to ten sessions in the first month. Deep massage in the first weeks bruises and prolongs swelling. ARTNER Cheongdam, Gangnam includes the first session in every ART-FAT plan, builds drainage plus RF tightening into the optional 6-week program, and teaches self-drainage for patients flying home.

Light hands, early, often. The patients who get aggressive massage in week one come back with more bruising and more fibrosis, not less. Lymphatic work is about moving fluid, not about moving fat.

Before you ask

Lymphatic massage questions answered by ARTNER Cheongdam, Gangnam.

Not strictly, but it speeds swelling resolution, softens firmness sooner and reduces seroma risk. ARTNER Cheongdam includes the first session and recommends six to ten in the first month.

Day two or three, very lightly, around rather than on the incisions. Nothing on days zero to two.

Two to three times a week in weeks one and two, twice weekly in weeks three and four, then one or two sessions in weeks five and six.

Very light — the weight of the hand only. If it hurts, it is too deep. Vigorous or "fat-breaking" massage in the first four weeks causes bruising and fibrosis.

Yes. ARTNER Cheongdam's nurse teaches self-drainage before you fly: five minutes twice a day, light strokes toward the nearest lymph nodes, after showering and before the garment.

Lymphatic drainage plus RF tightening sessions and the director's check — twice weekly in the first fortnight, weekly thereafter. It is optional and priced separately.

It shortens swelling and reduces fibrosis, which reveals the result sooner; it does not reshape or remove fat. Compression and the surgery decide the shape.

If you have a soft fluctuant swelling (possible seroma), redness and heat around an incision, or one-sided calf swelling. Send ARTNER Cheongdam a photo first.
