Liposuction swelling timeline in Cheongdam —
day 3, week 2, month 3 and month 6 in Gangnam.

Swelling peaks on day 1–3, when the treated area can look larger than it did before. It falls sharply over the first two weeks, then behaves unevenly for a month — lumpy, asymmetric, worse in the evening — before settling over two to three months. The line appears at month 2–3 and the final contour at about six. Every stage of that is normal, and knowing it in advance is most of the battle.

Liposuction swelling timeline at ARTNER Cheongdam, Gangnam
Swelling is a sequence, not a straight line down.

Swelling is the part of liposuction that patients underestimate and clinics under-explain. It is not a complication and it is not linear — it goes down, comes back in the evening, sits unevenly for weeks, then resolves. Here is what it does, why, and what actually influences it.

If this sounds like you

You are swollen and want to know if this is normal.

  • You look bigger now than before the procedure.
  • One side is more swollen than the other.
  • Your legs swell by evening and settle overnight.
  • You are at week three and it feels lumpy.
  • You want to know when you can judge the result.

All five are normal at their respective stages. The timeline below says which stage you are at.

The swelling timeline at a glance

This holds for awake ART-FAT liposuction. Lower body runs slower at every stage; the chin and upper body run faster.

Stage Swelling What it looks like What helps
Day 1–3 Peak Area larger than before treatment Walking, elevation, sleeping raised
Day 4–7 Falling Bruising surfaces; still firm Day-7 aftercare in Cheongdam
Week 2–4 Uneven Lumpy, asymmetric — normal for everyone Keep moving; stop daily photos
Month 2–3 Mostly settled The line appears from the side First real comparison photo
Month 6 Resolved Final contour Result judged and recorded

Why you look bigger in the first days

Tumescent technique infiltrates fluid into the treated layer, and the tissue responds to being worked with inflammation. Both add volume. For two or three days the area can genuinely measure larger than it did before treatment.

This is the stage patients photograph and panic about. It resolves quickly — most of that fluid clears within the first week — and it says nothing whatsoever about the eventual result.

Why one side swells more than the other

Because you sleep on one side, sit with weight through one hip, and use one arm more. Asymmetric swelling in the first month is mechanical, not surgical, and it usually reverses if you change how you have been lying.

Asymmetry that persists past three months is a different conversation, and it is one ARTNER Cheongdam will have with you on the photos rather than dismissing.

Accent Prime aftercare in Cheongdam supports the settling phase.

Why legs swell in the evening

Gravity. Fluid pools in dependent areas through the day and clears overnight, which is why thighs and especially calves look worse at 8pm than at 8am for two to three months.

It is why the lower body has the longest swelling course of any area, and why calf reduction in Cheongdam comes with the most patience required. Elevation in the evening genuinely helps; standing all day genuinely does not.

What actually reduces swelling — and what does not

Works: walking little and often from day one, elevation, sleeping raised, the scheduled 2:1 Accent Prime aftercare at ARTNER Cheongdam, and time. Does not work: pushing through a long walking day, deep massage early on, heat, and salt-heavy eating.

Compression has a role for a few days by area, but weeks in a garment is not what ARTNER Cheongdam uses — posture, movement and aftercare do more.

On garments specifically: compression garments after liposuction.

Week 2 to 4 — the lumpy stage

Firm, uneven, sometimes visibly rippled. It happens on almost every abdomen and back, and it is the single most common reason patients message from home worried something has gone wrong.

It is fluid and tissue reorganising, not a bad result. Keep the aftercare schedule, keep walking, and stop taking daily photographs — you cannot see progress at that resolution, and looking makes it worse.

When to judge the result in Cheongdam

At three months for a first read and six months for the final one, in the same light and pose as your pre-procedure photos. Anything before three months is a photograph of swelling.

ARTNER Cheongdam takes standardised studio photos precisely so the comparison is fair, and reviews photos you send from home in between.

In short — Swelling peaks day 1–3, falls sharply over two weeks, sits unevenly through weeks 2–4, and settles over two to three months, with the final contour at about six. Evening swelling in the legs is gravity, asymmetry in the first month is usually how you have been sleeping, and the result is judged at three months — not three weeks.

Before you ask

The science, plainly from ARTNER Cheongdam, Gangnam.

It peaks at day 1–3, falls sharply over two weeks, remains uneven through weeks 2–4 and settles over two to three months. The final contour appears at about six months.

Tumescent fluid plus inflammation add volume in the first days, so the area can genuinely measure larger. It clears within the first week and says nothing about the eventual result.

Usually mechanical — how you sleep, sit and carry weight. Asymmetric swelling in the first month commonly reverses when you change position habits; asymmetry past three months is assessed properly at ARTNER Cheongdam.

Gravity pools fluid in dependent areas through the day. Thighs and calves look worse at night for two to three months, and elevation in the evening genuinely helps.

Walking little and often, elevation, sleeping raised, the scheduled Accent Prime aftercare in Cheongdam, and time. Deep massage early, heat and long walking days do not.

Yes — it happens on almost every abdomen and back as fluid and tissue reorganise. Keep the aftercare schedule and stop taking daily photographs.

No. ARTNER Cheongdam uses a few days of light support by area plus 2:1 Accent Prime aftercare; posture and movement do more than weeks of compression.

Three months for a first read and six for the final, in the same light and pose. Anything earlier is a photograph of swelling rather than of the contour.
