Liposuction anaesthesia safety —
why ARTNER Cheongdam, Gangnam avoids general anaesthesia.

Liposuction can be done under tumescent local anaesthesia alone, local plus IV sedation, or general anaesthesia. ARTNER Cheongdam, Gangnam uses the first two and not the third: tumescent local provides the pain control and most of the safety, sedation adds comfort when wanted, and general anaesthesia adds airway and cardiovascular risk that the procedure does not require. The person managing your anaesthesia is the internal-medicine physician who is also operating — which is the safety feature most patients never think to ask about.

Tumescent anaesthesia preparation for awake liposuction at ARTNER Cheongdam, Gangnam
Tumescent local is the foundation of every Cheongdam case.

Almost every serious liposuction complication reported in the press involved general anaesthesia, large volumes, or both. ARTNER Cheongdam's approach to anaesthesia is designed around that fact, and it is worth understanding before you compare clinics.

If this sounds like you

You want to be comfortable — and you want to wake up.

  • You have been offered general anaesthesia and are unsure.
  • You are afraid of being awake and feeling it.
  • You have a medical condition and worry about sedation.
  • You want to know who is actually watching your vital signs.
  • You have read about liposuction deaths and want the facts.

Here are the three options, what each adds, and why Cheongdam draws the line where it does.

The three options compared in Cheongdam

Tumescent local only Local + IV sedation General anaesthesia
Awareness Fully awake, can talk Drowsy, often little memory Unconscious
Breathing Your own Your own Supported or controlled, airway device
Pain control Tumescent lidocaine Tumescent lidocaine (sedation adds comfort, not analgesia) Systemic
Main risks Lidocaine dose (managed by volume limits) Over-sedation, airway — low with monitoring Airway, cardiac, clots, nausea, prolonged recovery
Recovery to walking 30 minutes 45–60 minutes Hours; often overnight for large volumes
Used at ARTNER Cheongdam Yes — default Yes — optional No

Tumescent local: how it works and why it is safe

Tumescent anaesthesia infiltrates a large volume of very dilute lidocaine with adrenaline into the fat layer. The dilution lets a safe total dose numb a large area; the adrenaline constricts vessels, so bleeding is minimal and the lidocaine is absorbed slowly over hours rather than minutes. The fat becomes firm and swollen — "tumescent" — which also makes the cannula work more evenly.

Safety comes from respecting the lidocaine dose ceiling, which in practice limits how many areas can be treated in one session. That ceiling is the reason ARTNER Cheongdam stages large plans across two sessions rather than adding general anaesthesia to push through.

Volume ceilings and staging: how much fat can be removed in one session.

IV sedation: comfort without losing your airway

Sedation at ARTNER Cheongdam is light to moderate: a short-acting agent through a hand cannula that makes you drowsy, relaxed and usually amnesic for the procedure, while you continue to breathe for yourself and respond to voice. It does not replace the tumescent anaesthetic — pain control still comes from the lidocaine — it removes the anxiety and the awareness of tugging.

Monitoring is continuous: pulse oximetry, blood pressure, heart rate and, where indicated, capnography. Sedation depth is kept where you would wake if spoken to. Recovery is 45–60 minutes. For international patients, this is the most common choice for abdomen, flanks and thighs.

Choosing between the two: awake vs sedation liposuction.

Why ARTNER Cheongdam does not use general anaesthesia

General anaesthesia adds risks the procedure does not need: airway instrumentation, suppressed breathing and blood pressure, higher clot risk from immobility, nausea, and a prolonged recovery. It also removes a safety signal — the awake or lightly sedated patient who reports a sharp sensation is telling the surgeon the cannula is somewhere it should not be. Under general anaesthesia that signal is gone.

Most importantly, general anaesthesia enables the large-volume, multi-area, single-session surgery that accounts for the majority of serious liposuction complications. ARTNER Cheongdam, Gangnam chooses the limit that comes with staying awake, and stages the plan instead.

Who monitors you — and why it is an internist in Gangnam

At ARTNER Cheongdam the physician planning and delivering your anaesthesia is the internal-medicine specialist who screened your blood pressure, blood tests and medication list, and who is operating. There is no handover between a surgeon and a separate anaesthetist, and no technician managing sedation alone. Nursing staff monitor continuously and the director adjusts sedation in real time.

For patients with controlled hypertension, diabetes or thyroid disease, this matters: the doctor dosing the sedation knows your medical history first-hand rather than from a form.

Medical conditions and anaesthesia choice

Condition Anaesthesia plan at ARTNER Cheongdam
Controlled hypertension Local ± sedation; medication taken that morning
Diabetes Local ± sedation; glucose checked; fasting plan for the morning
Sleep apnoea Local-only preferred; light sedation with capnography if used
Anxiety disorder Sedation recommended; usual medication continued
Previous bad reaction to general anaesthesia Not relevant here — no general anaesthesia is used
Lidocaine allergy (true, rare) Liposuction declined; alternative plans discussed
On GLP-1 medication Skip the dose that week if sedation is planned (slowed gastric emptying)

Questions to ask any clinic about anaesthesia

What anaesthesia will I have, and who administers it? Is the person monitoring me a physician, and are they also the surgeon? Do you use general anaesthesia for large volumes, and if so where — hospital or clinic room? What is your lidocaine dose ceiling? What monitoring equipment is in the room? ARTNER Cheongdam's answers are above. A clinic that offers general anaesthesia for a 5-litre case in an outpatient room is one to walk away from.

In short — ARTNER Cheongdam, Gangnam performs liposuction under tumescent local anaesthesia, with optional light IV sedation for comfort, and never under general anaesthesia — which adds airway, cardiac and clot risk and enables the large single-session volumes behind most serious complications. The internal-medicine director who screened you also delivers and monitors the anaesthesia, and large plans are staged rather than pushed through.

I am an internist before I am a liposuction surgeon. I do not give general anaesthesia for a procedure that does not need it, and I do not hand my patient's airway to someone who met them five minutes ago. The awake patient is my best monitor.

Anaesthesia questions answered by ARTNER Cheongdam, Gangnam.

It is the safer option for the volumes a clinic should be doing. Tumescent local with optional sedation avoids airway, cardiac and clot risks and keeps the patient able to report sensation.

Pressure, movement and tugging — not sharp pain. Pain control comes from the tumescent lidocaine; if any spot is sharp the director adds anaesthetic. Sedation removes the awareness if you prefer.

Drowsy and relaxed, often with little memory of the procedure, while breathing on your own and responding to voice. Recovery to walking is 45–60 minutes.

It adds risk the procedure does not need and enables the large single-session volumes behind most serious liposuction complications. We stage large plans instead.

Local-only is preferred; if sedation is used it is kept light with capnography monitoring. Tell the director at consultation.

Tumescent anaesthesia uses very dilute lidocaine within an established per-kilogram ceiling. That ceiling is why ARTNER Cheongdam limits areas per session and stages larger plans.
